How to talk to a guy on Facebook that you never really talked to in person?

We used to go to the same school but hes a grade higher than me. So we never actually talked the other day I sent him a friend request and he added me. Hes really cute and everyone says he nice but I don't really know how to talk to him. I know it sounds stupid but I'm really shy and don't like awkwardness. Help. haha
